To begin with this particular recipe, we must prepare a few ingredients. You can cook cottage pie using 12 ingredients and 9 steps. Here is how you can achieve that.

Ingredients requirements - Cottage Pie:

  1. Need 1 large - onion - diced.
  2. Provide 2 large carrots - diced.
  3. Need 1 stick of celery - diced.
  4. Need 500 grams beef mince.

I followed the recipe for everything except the green peas coz I do not have them on hand. I use a bigger onion instead. I forgot to dot extra butter on top but it still came out crisp with adequately brown. There are many variations of the recipe, but the defining ingredients include minced or ground beef with onions (and sometimes other vegetables) in.





Cottage Pie steps:

  1. Brown onions, carrots and celery in a large pan..
  2. Add mince and continue cooking until brown..
  3. Add tomato puree, worcestershire sauce, mixed herbs and flour, stir together and add beef stock and mushrooms..
  4. Continue cooking with a lid on for 30 mins on a low heat..
  5. In a separate pan bring potatoes to the boil in salted water and cook until tender..
  6. Transfer meat mixture to a large pie dish..
  7. Mash potatoes with plenty of butter and a little milk..
  8. Spread mash on top of meat evenly and fluff with a fork..
  9. Place pie under a pre-heated grill until golden brown..

This is a meat and carb heavy dish, so it goes really well with fresh side salads like a Rocket Salad with Balsamic Dressing, or a Garden Salad with French or Italian Dressing. I recently served it with this Carrot Salad with a Honey Dijon Dressing which was a hit!. For a cosy meal on a cold winter night, try it with a side of Glazed Roasted Carrots and Sautéed. A traditional cottage pie is made with ground beef and topped with mashed potatoes. We used potato slices, which saves time and looks good, too.
